Pressure Treated Wood And Aluminum Boat

Re: pressure treated wood on an aluminum jon boat from what i gather the pressure-treated lumber causes corrosion and in bad cases pitting that can be a major problem. i would think that the more water gets in the boat the bigger the problem as the chemicals leach out of the wood.. I found out pressure treated ply wood is corrosive to aluminum, therefore i had to take it all out. do not use pressure treated ply wood in an aluminum boat!!! had i known, i would have never put. Apparently certain types of pressure treated wood contain copper which causes dissimilar metal corrosion with aluminum. below are some photos of the bottom of one of my boats. the boat was sitting on pressure treated wooden bunks that were covered with carpet..

If your pressure treated wood has no copper, then you should be fine (unless it has some other metal that aluminum doesn't get along with - i work with aluminum, and don't claim to know everything in modern pressure treated wood).. The chemicals used to pressure treat wood contain a high percent of copper and copper and aluminum are not the best of friends. many of the aluminum boat builders are using pressure treated plywood for flooring due to it's low cost compared to mdo.. How to use treated wood for aluminum boat floors by kyle mcbride . floorboards are an ideal addition to an aluminum boat. they will provide a buffer from the pumping action of the boat's bottom against the water for your feet and gear. the false bottom will also allow water to drain into the channels in the true bottom and run aft to the drain.
